A recent study reveals that patients who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users using these treatments need to be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the jabs accounts for the amplified rebound.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and you become ravenous," said an individual.
This challenge is compounded if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Use is more common among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural changes.
